The first generation of the Subaru Impreza sedan and wagon modification debuted in 1992. Later, in 1994, they began producing an exclusive Impreza with a coupe. The car has occupied an empty niche between Subaru Legacy and Subaru Justy. Initially, the authors of the Impreza project had a task: to make a series car that would become a reliable “base” for participation, and possibly, for the victory in the WRC world rally championship. Thanks to the efforts of the designers, the car was brilliant and unusual, and it was this super individuality that became the trump card that allowed the Subaru Impreza to establish itself in the market and gain recognition from customers. The elegant design of the body looks great for this day. The interior is quite austere, mainly due to the abundance of plastic, but the quality of the assembly and the installation of the materials covers this inconvenience. The interior is not too spacious, but the ergonomics of the driver’s seat is almost perfect. Impreza positioned itself not only as a family car, but as a car with a “sports bias”.

At a very reasonable cost, the model was able to give the driver a lot of pleasure when driving actively. Three complete sets: Impreza front-wheel drive with a 1.5-liter / 90 hp engine capacity, all-wheel drive with a 1.6-liter / 102 hpengine capacity and all-wheel drive with a 1.8-liter / 115-liter engine. c. – Fully met the needs of the people who bought Subaru Impreza for family use. A choice: “mechanical” 5 steps and “automatic” 4 steps. At the same time, the Impreza WRX category was being developed in parallel, equipped with a two-liter turbocharged engine with a capacity of 155 hp. and 4WD, aimed at sports enthusiasts. Compared to the Impreza base model, the WRX installed wider, lower profile tires, better brakes and a reinforced suspension. The front and rear wheels were equipped with ventilated disc brakes. The gross weight of the vehicle was 1220 kg.

The suspension of the extreme version is much more difficult than in civil modifications, but it is also much stronger. And the lack of comfort is compensated with tremendous handling and stability at extreme speeds. As the model developed, there was a rejection of the complete family games, which included Impreza with 1.8 and 1.6 liter engines. They were replaced by models with a two-liter engine. In terms of reliability, here Impreza will not disappoint you, as all units are tough enough. The bodies are almost not afraid of corrosion, because they are galvanized. Until 1999, there was not a single complete change in the Subaru Impreza lineup, only a partial restyling of the body was made. In the year 2000, the second generation debuted. The Impreza WRX in the sedan began to be equipped with a turbocharged 250 hp engine. and engine with a natural intake of 155 HP.

For true fans of this brand, the Subaru Impreza WRX STi was also launched in 2000 with a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine of the EJ20 brand. Developed 280 CV.With a torque of 38.0 kg / m. This car was completed with a 6-speed manual gearbox with close transmission ratios. The Subaru Impreza WRX STi was fitted with 16-inch tires. Large intercooler, independent suspension, Brembo brake system, etc. always the car excellent driving performance. The all-wheel drive system “consisted” of a central differential and a limited slip viscous coupling (limited slip differential). In 2002, the car has undergone another minor upgrade of the model range, and, of course, the Impreza in the STi version has only improved. The engine has been improved: increased engine torque. In addition, the car in the Spec C configuration “shod” in 17-inch tires and equipped with all-wheel drive system with electronic control about¬†1931 model a car cover.

The second generation, in turn, can be divided into two versions: dorestayling and posttesting. They only differ in details, and the most impressive was the front end of the Impreza, more precisely, the front optics. The fact is that in 2002, the Subaru factory rally team received several complaints about the “round elegant” headlights. The shape of such optics did not allow to place in itself racing lamps, search lights for a better lighting of the track in high-speed sections with poor visibility. There were also serious complaints in the aerodynamics of the front end.

The wishes were accepted, the Subaru specialists worked hard on the machine, installed new block lights, no less elegant, instead of “round”, and modified the front aerodynamics. In general, the technical filling of two generations of Impreza is practically the same, the modifications remained almost the same, only changing its name. As for the types of engines, gearboxes, suspension geometry, all this was transferred from the old to the new generation with only a small modernization. The third generation of Impreza appeared in the Japanese market in 2007 and initially was only represented in the body of the hatchback. The model was equipped with a 1.5-liter DOHC engine that produced 107 hp. either a 2-liter SOHC with a capacity of 150 hp, the first available in combination with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic, and the latter only with a 4-speed automatic. The car was offered in mono-drive and all-wheel drive version. In 2008, according to marketing considerations, a sedan was added to the Impreza body line. The car was distinguished by greater comfort, a new grill design, chrome finish elements and made the overall impression of luxury.

First generation (1992): The birth of a legend

At the beginning of the 90s, Subaru boasted of its Legacy model, an excellent saloon, which needed to be replaced with a sports version that offered guarantees to participate in the World Rally Championship (WRC). The market featured a classic four-door sedan (GC) version as well as the five-door family sport (GF). At first light, they turned out to be comfortable, versatile vehicles with a spectacular air intake on the bonnet that is still maintained for recent models. For 1995 the coupe variant of two doors (GM) with a sportier bearing took to the streets. However, the Impreza movement was born to run and its development was thought in motorsport with the sole purpose of taking the title to the crew of the Subaru World Rally Team , name of the official team that competed in the WRC. Their immediate successes allowed this first generation to extend until the year 2000, a period that constituted the beginning of a legendary vehicle and that was subject to consequent improvements. The first evolution corresponded to Impreza WRX (World Rally Experimental), also called Impreza GC Turbo that incorporated a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that developed a power of up to 218 hp and an acceleration from 0 to 100km / h in 5.4 seconds, everything a record of the time.

Second generation (2000): a Subaru Impreza with power for history

The second generation Subaru Impreza was launched in 2000 , which maintained the engine mechanics of its predecessor. The sedan and family bodies were also maintained in the street versions, but left behind the coupe variant. The model of the new millennium only presented some aesthetic modifications, which spoke of the perfection of its evolved mechanical concept since its birth. This design was valid for eight years, during which time it suffered two aesthetic updates.. The powerhouse also made its race updates, which led the Subaru Impreza WRX to reach a maximum power of up to 250 hp, driven by the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. For its part, the STi version had a double turbocharger that reached an amazing 280 hp. Its presence influenced the valuation that included this model among the 10 best cars of 2002 and 2003 of the US market, while the Boxer was decorated as the International Engine of the Year .

Third generation (2007): The new image

The big bet of the Japanese brand came in 2007 with the Subaru Impreza WRX STi , the third generation of the range of tourism with a larger engine that generated a power of up to 301 hp and would also go down in history. Although he kept the air intake on the hood, which is part of his sporting idiosyncrasy, it was his change of image that broke with his aesthetic guidelines. His new line was more stylized, with a presence that did not go unnoticed. It was a high performance car with a turbocharged engine and standard natural aspiration system that improved its efficiency. The mechanical innovations of this series continued with the inclusion of the 2.0-liter diesel engine, a novelty for the Impreza range in an attempt to adapt to a particular segment of the market.

Fourth generation (2012): The technological revolution arrives at the Subaru Impreza

The technological revolution reached the Impreza for its fourth generation, which debuted in 2012. The new version maintained its external dimensions, but extended the distance between the axes to favor the interior space. This Impreza was based on the newly created Subaru Global Platform , a manufacturing system that improved mechanical strength in terms of durability and driving, designed to provide confidence in the development of subsequent generations. Curiously, for the year 2015 the car lost its name Impreza and was called WRX STi to dry. This evolution of high technology was established among the most powerful compacts in the market, although it was not available in the European continent. This 2.5-liter turbocharged 2.5-liter engine was chosen as the Car of the Year in Japan in consecutive seasons (2016 and 2017) , a distinction that the Subaru brand had only received in 2003 with the Legacy. The production of this technological monster was suspended in early 2018, as a result of European regulations on carbon emissions, which marked a generational closure.

Fifth generation (2018): The new era

After several years out of the Spanish market, Subaru Impreza returned with a new generation evolution. The innovative technological endowment made it possible to further improve power and maneuverability, operational safety and comfort inside the passenger compartment. The 2018 update corresponds to the fifth generation of the Japanese compact that was presented at the Frankfurt International Motor Show with a new, wider design. Nor could miss his birthmark, air intakes on the hood, this time larger, which gave signs of his impressive stamp. This version was already rolling in his native Japan and the United States, his second largest market of the brand, where more than 43,000 sales were reported. Finally, the new Subaru Impreza arrived in Europe surrounded by many expectations as shown by the predecessor generations. In spite of an important mechanical evolution, it kept the Boxer engine with more than 50 years of development and the symmetrical four-wheel drive (AWD, All-Wheel Drive), created more than 40 years ago. Both systems have accompanied the Impreza since its birth more than quarter of a century ago. The new model includes traction and stability controls, brake assist and a lower center of gravity that benefits its dynamic behavior and provides greater maneuvering precision.
